There are two theories of how TENS relieves pain: The "Gate-Control" theory suggests that the mild vibrating sensation stops the incoming pain messages from being interpretedby the brain as pain. The "Opiate" theory considers TENS stimulation may encourage the production of endorphins, the body's natural pain killers. Unlike many medications, TENS is non-addictive with no major side effects.
Pain is the natural warning system of the body. Pain lets us know if we are injured or if something is "wrong." However, once the injury heals, pain may persist and become chronic which serves no useful purpose. A doctor must check your pain, determine the cause, and prescribe appropriate treatment, which may include a TENS system.
TENS units are available only with a doctor's prescription. You must first see your doctor and have your pain evaluated. The doctor will determine if a TENS unit is appropriate for your condition, and if so, will contact us.
TENS units are generally covered by insurance companies, although the exact coverage varies with the insurance company. We can help you determine your policy's coverage and advise you. If you do not have insurance coverage, we may still be able to work with you.
